With two enthralling full-length albums in the bank, German dark folk entity PRAG 83 returns with something new, something old. Even though consisting of separate releases, the melancholic and reflective red thread is easily discerned through the whole of "The Dance".
Morose melodies, crestfallen chords and melancholic moods permeate the seven songs, with Herr K.'s hypnotizingly soothing voice weaving through the gloom with inimitable grace. Contrasting with the harmonic, acoustic and elegiac beauty of the first two EP's "Énouement" and "A Fire's Blessing", rugged and clamorous drums and guitars provide a dynamic boost as unreleased EP "The Dance" displays a fiercer side of PRAG 83 while never compromising with the intimate vehemence.

Originally released in 2016, Prag 83’s “Metamorphoses” now returns for the first time on vinyl.

Musically rooted in dark folk yet shaped by something far more contemplative, “Metamorphoses” occupies a space between the gloom of “Discouraged Ones”-era Katatonia and the earthbound austerity of Lönndom. Sparse, rugged, and unembellished, its sound carries a lingering weight – closer to a state of mind than a conventional musical expression.

Echoes of Kafkan introspection run throughout: a world where change offers no relief, only a deeper awareness of the void. There is no catharsis here, no guiding light – only a stark reflection of the inner landscape where melancholy and understanding coexist.

Sometimes all it takes is to be out there. In the misty, cold dark reality and be alone. A suburban street with impotent street lights failing to break through the spell of the fog. A city underpass with the pungent smell of urine the only reminder of other human existence. Or a windswept moor after midnight with owl’s silently devouring rodents and foxes quietly careening past as you realize your own insignificance. In such situations creative sparks are born and the sounds of the Earth reveal themselves. Herr K has clearly been listening, as Fragments Of Silence offers a portal into the eerie, yet unmistakably earthly void. Metamorphoses, was an homage to Kafka and while the bleakness of Fragments…tips a grey, tattered cap in the direction of the great man, it draws greater strength from our existential state and especially from the murky world of nightly dreams. “You are free, and that is why you are lost” Kafka reminds us. But listen closely and you will see yourself in Herr K’s sonic mirror and remember that ‘found and enslaved is no match for ‘lost and free’, especially in a world painted in such a stark, yet enchanting monochrome.
